Belagavi, June 10: In a bid to promote eco-tourism while ensuring minimal environmental impact, the state government has proposed a wildlife safari in the buffer zone of Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS) in Khanapur taluk. Belagavi Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan announced the initiative during a media interaction organized by the Belagavi Media Association at Vartha Bhavan on Thursday.

Sustainable Safari Plan

Roshan clarified that the safari will be strictly confined to the sanctuary’s buffer zone, avoiding the ecologically sensitive core forest area. “A small, designated stretch with an existing road will be used for the safari. To minimize pollution, only electric vehicles will operate, ensuring zero emissions,” he said. The project aims to educate visitors, particularly the youth, about wildlife and forest ecosystems through firsthand experience.

No Link to Tribal Relocation: DC

Addressing concerns, Roshan urged the media not to conflate the safari project with the ongoing relocation of forest-dwelling communities. “The relocation is a separate welfare measure, not a conservation-driven displacement. Due to legal restrictions, basic amenities cannot be provided deep inside the sanctuary. We are encouraging families to shift voluntarily to the buffer zone with fair compensation, ensuring they remain connected to the forest,” he explained.

Compensation Package

Eligible families opting for relocation will receive ₹15 lakh per household, disbursed in phases. An initial ₹10 lakh will be provided to purchase land in the buffer zone, with the remaining ₹5 lakh released upon submission of land ownership documents.

Stakeholder Reactions

While the move has been welcomed by tourism stakeholders, environmental groups have called for stringent monitoring to ensure the safari does not disrupt wildlife. The forest department is expected to conduct an impact assessment before final approval.
