Regional Imbalance Redressal Committee Meeting Held in Belagavi

Belagavi, Feb 20: The Karnataka Regional Imbalance Redressal Committee, chaired by Prof. M. Govind Rao, held a meeting at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha to discuss measures for balanced regional development. The committee is reviewing the 2002 Dr. D.M. Nanjundappa Report and plans to update it with 40-50 new indicators based on the latest Human Development Index.

Prof. Govind Rao highlighted that only four districts in Karnataka have a per capita income above the state average, with Bengaluru’s high earnings skewing the overall figures. The committee stressed the need for improved rural infrastructure, employment generation, and sector-wise investments in irrigation, agriculture, and industries.

Officials emphasized prioritizing the development of backward regions in Kalyana and Kittur Karnataka. Vishal R., Member Secretary of the Committee, noted that government grants and private sector incentives will be incorporated into the recommendations. Regional Commissioner Sanjay Shettar highlighted the need for quality education and employment opportunities in North Karnataka.

MLA Viththal Halgekar called for better connectivity in forested areas and more funding for Malenadu and Kittur Karnataka. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan emphasized Belagavi’s industrial potential, while District Police Superintendent Dr. Bhimashankar Guled stressed the importance of law and order for business growth.

Suggestions included promoting tourism, renewable energy, and agriculture. Farmers urged fair pricing for sugarcane, and industrialists called for improved infrastructure. The meeting saw participation from government officials, industry representatives, and experts, who provided recommendations to address regional disparities effectively.
