“No Voting Rights for Nominated Members” – Governor

Bengaluru. The Governor has returned another bill sent by the government, refusing to approve it, stating that granting voting rights to nominated members is not the correct procedure. The state government had introduced an amendment in this bill to allow nominations to cooperative societies based on reservation criteria.

The Governor has expressed objections to this amendment. He argued that it would lead to the control of cooperative societies being handed over, and the rights of elected members would be undermined through backdoor means.

Additionally, he criticized that this step weakens the autonomy of the cooperative sector. The Governor has also raised objections to the Karnataka Souharda Cooperative (Amendment) Bill – 2024, which proposed the abolition of the Cooperative Election Authority. He emphasized that the authority exists to ensure that cooperative society elections are conducted independently and fairly. Sources indicate that he stated the proposal to abolish cooperative election authorities due to financial burden is not appropriate.
